Thursday May 25: Minden A couple more photos from our evening at Prince Edward park last night. The beach was very reminiscent of a Hawaiian beach, other than the temperature. Funny to be feeling like we are heading into the great northern wilderness of Ontario, when we are still roughly in parallel with Portland, Oregon. But the towns are certainly smaller, and we are approaching the endless bush and granite of the Canadian Shield.  Most of today was northward along the Trent Servern waterway, starting northward from Cobourg, with pit stops in Peterborough, with its famous lifting lock system, and Lindsay with a pretty little mill remnant. We watched some quite big fish being caught along the canal in Lindsay. The goal for the evening was a free camping at a Walmart parking in Minden Ontario, but when we got here... no Walmart!  Sunday, May 21: Today was driving along the Ottawa River north from Montreal to Ottawa. We stuck to the small riverside road, through rustic farmlands and small towns. Apparently this mid May sunny Sunday is a traditional day for les Vendre de Garage. Every little town had at least every fifth or sixth lawn with a garage sale. That, and the mobs of motorcycles and convertible cars on the road made for rather a festive atmosphere. The only significant stop was Montebello, which was the manorial home of Louis Jaques Papineau, one of the leaders of the mid 1800s rebellion. The house was interesting enough, but more impressive was the next door Fairmont Resort, a huge rambling old hotel, built of logs. It was dark inside, but obviously a high roller kind of place. We are set up for a couple of nights with an old friend, Devon Woods, in his lovely old house not far from downtown and the Parliament Buildings. Jeudi, 17 Mai: Port St Francis Today was driving from Quebec City, along the south bank of the St Lawrence. We did stop at the Parc des Chutes Montmorency. It is quite the spectacular Falls, apparently second only to Niagara in Canada. The visitor reception area was pretty off-putting, with poor signage and a lot of construction. It is also pretty commercialized, with a gondola and souvenir shop. There was a gate house that wanted to charge us $8.50 to enter what should be a public park, but fortunately it was closed so we breezed right in. There is a stairway from bottom to top, which might be interesting, but 74 year old knees probably couldn't handle it! This photo doesn't do it justice because of perspective, but you really just want to look at me anyway. The rest of the day was driving through some pretty countryside and small towns with spectacular huge churches, to this stopover campground near Trois Rivieres.
